Landmarc Scientific Concepts: Nuclear Fusion

Nuclear fusion is a process where two light atomic nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, releasing vast amounts of energy. It powers the sun and stars, offering the potential for a nearly limitless, clean energy source on Earth. Unlike nuclear fission, fusion produces minimal radioactive waste and no greenhouse gas emissions. The primary fuel for fusion, isotopes of hydrogen like deuterium and tritium, are abundant. However, achieving controlled fusion requires extremely high temperatures and pressures to overcome repulsive forces between nuclei, making it technologically challenging. Research, including projects like ITER, is ongoing to make fusion a practical energy source.
